In this regional child nutrition program, Action Ministries provides children who receive free or reduced-price lunches during the school year with access to healthy lunches during the summer. Research shows that proper nutrition during childhood plays an important role in a person’s physical and mental health. Individuals and organizations are encouraged to get involved and help children in their communities.
After identifying the area where help is most needed, a local organizer sets up host sites, recruits and organizes volunteers to assemble the lunches, and coordinates partnerships between organizations and communities.
How It Works
The day before delivery, in a place of the volunteer’s choosing, the lunches are assembled and dropped off at the local distribution site. These sites are open by 9 a.m., and drivers must arrive there by 11 a.m. to load their vehicles. Routes are designed to take one to two hours to complete. Volunteers are typically finished by 2 p.m.

Our volunteers are the heart of the Smart Lunch, Smart Kid program–and the key to our success! We provided more than 117,000 lunches to Georgia’s hungry children last summer, and this year we hope to double our impact. However, we can’t do it without YOU. Civic, congregational and corporate groups joining together to help others is a fun, easy and rewarding experience. To sign up to volunteer online, click on the SignUp Genius button and find the location nearest you. Your volunteers can provide lunches, pack and check them at the distribution centers or drive lunches to kids.
There are so many ways to help! Your volunteers can:
Every week during the summer, we need food preparation help. With a demand of up to 400 lunches per day in some areas, Smart Lunch, Smart Kid depends on support from the community to keep this effort alive. Whether you can help weekly or just once, there is a place for you!
Drive lunches to the kids
The driver corps is the face of the program. A committed team of volunteer drivers is needed to take lunches directly to the children. They are an essential part of the program and are trained to build a trusting relationship with the children they serve.
Pack and check lunches at the distribution centers
If you prefer organizing, our local project coordinators are always in need of help packing and preparing the lunches!
