How Does a Leader Know What to Do?

Enjoy this guest blog post by Coach Bill Curry, who along with Dr. Homer Rice, will host our first We are Life-Changers breakfast on Oct. 16 at Peachtree Road UMC. A limited number of tickets are still available online. Please join us to hear more about Life-Changing leadership.

In Ron Greer’s great book, If You Know Who You Are, You Will Know What To Do, he cites a scenario during the Nazi holocaust, in which members of the Dutch Reformed Church in the Netherlands approached one of their leaders, Hendrik Kraemer, a lay missionary. They explained that their Jewish friends were disappearing with regularity, and told Kraemer they needed him to tell them what to do. His response was life changing, for all concerned, AND FOR US IN THIS DEMANDING HOUR. He told them he would not, could not, tell them what to do, but that he would remind them of who they were.

Kraemer quoted I Peter 2:9. “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that you may proclaim the excellence of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”

He turned to his puzzled brothers and said, “If you know who you are, you will know what to do.” That night, the Dutch Resistance was formed, and many lives were saved from an awful fate.

That is Leadership with a capital L.

Dr. Homer Rice, coming out of the Methodist tradition (he’s a preacher’s kid), has long used the platform of education and athletics to promote the development of each child’s “Total Person.” Thousands of lives have been transformed during his years at various universities, high schools and in the NFL. His book, Leadership Fitness, is a marvel.

When he personalizes and autographs it, he often quotes Matthew 7:7-8. “Ask and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.”

At Action Ministries, we know who we are.

We keep on knocking. We mobilize communities to address the challenges of poverty by focusing on hunger relief, housing and education. Last year more than 100,000 people were served and many more lives changed by Action Ministries.

We lead by Action, and pray that you will join us in this wonderful mission!
