In Georgia, which ranks ninth in the nation for poverty rate, there are large numbers of low-income families who lack access to certified, IRS-trained tax preparers and fail to claim important tax credits. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.
IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. In 2015, VITA assisted in filing more than 13,000 returns, resulting in total refunds of $14.5 million and saving working poor families more than $5 million in tax preparation fees.
Action Ministries, as part of its educational focus in leading people out of poverty, has offered VITA in some of its locations since 2013. This year, people can visit VITA sites in Athens, Covington and Gainesville.
“Action Ministries in the Piedmont region is happy to again partner with Newton Federal Bank and the Covington Housing Authority to offer this wealth-building service to our local community,” said Tamara Richardson, regional director. “We look forward to saving our clients potentially hundreds of dollars in fees.”
