ATLANTA, Ga. (August 23, 2015) – Leaders of Action Ministries have announced that, thanks to widespread community support, the nonprofit’s Smart Lunch, Smart Kid program exceeded the number of lunches it served to Georgia’s children last summer, serving in more counties and with deeper educational enrichment programs for kids, feeding their minds and bodies. The four-year program total meals served is 791,819. The organization expects to cross the 1,000,000 meals served mark in 2016 in year five of the program.
Designed to help some of the 1 million Georgia children who are at risk of hunger in the summer, the Smart Lunch, Smart Kid program is targeted to students in the state who receive a free or reduced-price lunch during the school year but do not have access to this important meal when the school year ends. The lunches are delivered directly to neighborhoods in need to overcome the barrier of lack of transportation. Through its Smart Lunch, Smart Kid program, Action Ministries was able to coordinate the work of local volunteers and organizations and lead them in their successful efforts to provide children with healthy meals and educational enrichment opportunities.
